Lekhanta is a Nepali-language feature film that sheds light on the emotional and social impact of foreign employment (migration) through the story of a young married couple from rural Nepal. The main character, Akash, is an ambitious young man who dreams of going to America to improve his family’s financial condition. Though academically weak, Akash is married to Sandhya KC, a highly intelligent and talented woman. Sandhya is not only academically gifted but also beautiful. Just a few years into their marriage, Akash shares his dream of settling together in America with Sandhya. However, Sandhya is not happy about going abroad so soon after their marriage. Still, for the sake of Akash’s happiness, she suppresses her own feelings and agrees to his plans. Akash brings Sandhya to Kathmandu and, with the help of a local agent named Dinesh Sharma, takes out a large loan to attempt an illegal migration route to America without informing Sandhya about the risks involved. When Sandhya discovers the truth, tension arises in their relationship. Before heading to America, Akash travels to Dubai, but the plan fails, and he becomes stranded there. He returns home not just financially devastated but emotionally broken as well. Unable to return to the village, he remains in Kathmandu. Understanding Akash’s pain, Sandhya moves to Kathmandu to support him. As Akash becomes more financially unstable, his days are spent chasing agents. With increasing pressure from creditors, the couple begins searching for a new way forward. During this time, they meet an education consultant, Rajan Shrestha, who proposes sending Sandhya to New Zealand on a student visa. At first, Sandhya outright rejects the idea, while Akash supports it and persuades his wife to accept the proposal. The plan involves showing a young man named Jeevan as Sandhya’s legal partner for immigration purposes. Sandhya is eventually granted a dependent visa to accompany Jeevan to New Zealand. With a smile, Akash bids farewell to his wife, while Sandhya leaves heartbroken. Over time, in New Zealand, Sandhya and Jeevan develop a real romantic relationship. Sandhya begins to drift emotionally away from Akash, who remains lonely and broken in Kathmandu. Although she initially sends money back, Sandhya eventually stops all support. Suspicion and doubt begin to grow in Akash’s mind. Their relationship deteriorates further as love between Sandhya and Jeevan blossoms. The bitterness between Akash and Sandhya deepens. Sandhya becomes completely distant, blocks Akash on all social media and phone communication, and cuts all ties with him. Distressed by the sudden disappearance of his wife, Akash seeks help from consultant Rajan and travels to New Zealand in search of her. After much effort, they find Sandhya living in an apartment with Jeevan as husband and wife. Witnessing this, Akash is devastated. Overcome with emotion, he slaps Sandhya and leaves. Having lost everything and betrayed by his own wife, Akash attempts to take his own life. Rajan rescues him and brings him back to Nepal. As Akash returns to Nepal, the incident spreads rapidly through the Nepali media. Later, Sandhya also returns to Nepal, formally divorces Akash, and plans to start a new life with Jeevan. However, Jeevan’s parents, who already know everything about Sandhya, reject her. Unable to go against his family, Jeevan distances himself from Sandhya, leaving her completely alone. The film ends on a contemplative note, portraying the pain of broken dreams, emotional sacrifices, and the irreversible consequences of migration. Lekhanta, shot in both Nepal and New Zealand, powerfully explores the themes of illegal migration, emotional detachment, love, duty, and individual freedom in the context of a rapidly globalizing world.
